GRADUATE STUDENTS

Betty Chen, MS

Doctoral Student in the Motion Analysis Laboratory. Betty's background is physical therapy. Her main research interest is in the area of fall prevention in the elderly, with an emphasis on gait analysis, muscle activities and demands during locomotion, and clinical balance assessment tools.

Vipul Lugade, MS

Doctoral Student in the Motion Analysis Laboratory. Vipul is investigating the risk of falling in the elderly population as well as the functional recovery of the hip following total hip arthroplasty. He is also working with Dr. Steven Chatfield to create a protocol for assessing the kinetic and kinematic chain of Tai Chi motion.

His personal interests include playing golf, poker, biking, snowboarding and bowling.

Masahiro (Masa) Fujimoto, MS

Doctoral Student in the Motion Analysis Laboratory. Masa is interested in seeing age-related changes in motor function to reveal the underlying mechanisms of motor deterioration in old age. He is attempting to apply mechanical theories to acquire a better understanding of mechanisms governing human movement.

Jim Becker

Master's student in the Motion Analysis Laboratory. Jim's
research interests include using biomechanics to improve sports performance and for prediction and prevention of injury.

Jim is a USA Track and Field Level II coach in Distance, Jumps, and Combined events.

His personal interests include increasing athletic performance, skiing, camping, cycling and climbing.

Shiu-Ling Chiu, MS

Doctoral Student in the Motion Analysis Laboratory. Shiu-Ling's research interests are to characterize the lower extremity musculoskeletal biomechanics associated with pathological movements and their influences on daily activities, functional performance, muscle strength, and balance.

Scott Breloff, MS

Doctoral Student in the Motion Analysis Laboratory. Scott is interested in deviations from normal gait. Specifically conditions which can be encountered in the work place (sloped or uneven surfaces). Scott is investigating the change in biomechanical variables during non-normal surface walking with the intent to tease out possible mechanisms which could lead to falling and injuries.

His personal interests include, camping/hiking, biking, golf, skeet shooting, skiing and racquetball.

Jeremy Wearn

Senior in the Human Physiology Department and the Robert D. Clark Honors College. Jeremy travelled to Tanzania last summer on a medical internship and has since developed a passion for traveling and medicine. He is a Pre-med
student who is interested in orthopedic surgery, but plans to broaden his horizons before attending medical school by teaching English abroad upon graduation this spring. He is currently working on his thesis, which examines the effect concussions have on young adults' ability to cross obstacles.
